London 1862
Captain Francis Fowke was an engineer and architect who had supervised the construction of the original Crystal Palace. The building had a main structure and two adjoining wings set at right angles. The 350-meters long facade was made of a row of arched windows, corner pavilions, and a main entrance with columns and flags. The building's two domes, made of iron and glass, were imeant to be the most impressive feature of the building. With a diameter of 49 meters, they were higher than the domes of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and St. Peter’s in Rome.
