      Researchers from UC San Diego (UC San Diego) and the Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) have combined expertise in the humanities (cultural history), architecture, and engineering to create a multidisciplinary investigation of the Turin 1911 World's Fair.

      The archival digital section of the project collects, examines, and preserves a stunning array of artifacts, ephemera, publications, architectural designs, documentaries, and other materials pertaining to the exposition and its fairgrounds in the Parco del Valentino.

      The project also involves the 3D re-creation and accurate positioning of some of the notable buildings that were dismantled at the end of the 1911 Exposition. Thanks to digital technologies exploited by Geomatics it is possible to recreate the shape of the exhibition allowing to virtually navigate the 1911 fairgrounds.


      		 Cristina Della Coletta is Dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities and Chancellor's Associates Chair in Italian Studies at UC San Diego. She is the author of the books When Stories Travel: Cross-Cultural Encounters Between Fiction and Film (Johns Hopkins UP 2012); World’s Fairs Italian-Style: The Great Expositions in Turin and Their Narratives (Toronto UP, 2006); and Plotting the Past: Metamorphoses of Historical Narrative in Modern Italian Fiction (Purdue UP, 1996). Professor Della Coletta is the P.I. for this project.

      Filiberto Chiabrando is Associate Professor in Geomatics at the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) and Adjunct Associate Professor at Michigan Technological University - Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering (USA). His main research interests are related to photogrammetry, unmanned aerial systems, laser scanning, 3D reconstruction, 3D modelling, Virtual Reality/Augmented reality, rapid mapping, and sensor integration often connected to Cultural Heritage documentation in architectural and archaeological contexts.

      		Dominique Rissolo is an archaeologist and research scientist with the Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture, and Archaeology at the University of California, San Diego, where he co-leads the Cultural Heritage Engineering Initiative. He has extensive experience in the digital documentation of heritage sites and structures in the Americas and Europe. Dominique is interested in the development and critical evaluation of digital workflows for the capture, analysis, and valorization of heritage places.  

      		Nannina (Antonia) Spanò is Associate professor in Geomatics in the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) at the Polytechnic University of Turin. Professor Spanò is the co-coordinator of the PhD program in Architectural and Landscape Heritage. Research activities and publications focus on 3D metric surveys with advanced methods: Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), digital Photogrammetry, Close-Range and from UAV platforms, Mobile Mapping Systems based on SLAM technology, digital applications (GIS) for landscapes and cultural heritage.

      		Alessandra Spreafico is a PhD student in Architectural and Landscape Heritage at the Polytechnic University of Turin. In her studies she focuses on the documentation of cultural heritage materials combining historical resources and Geomatics techniques to virtually reconstruct architectural structures that are no longer existing. Her research focuses on the integration of visualization systems related to historical and cultural heritage, in particular WebGIS.

  • Versalynn Roa received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Management. She joined UC San Diego in 2008 as Executive Assistant to the Chair and Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  She currently serves as the Executive Assistant to the Dean in the Division of Arts & Humanities performing office management and high-level administrative support. As key member of the support team of the Turin 1911 project Ms. Roa provides logistical support with initiatives and events, works as the liaison to the faculty at the Politecnico of Turin, and plays an important role in archiving original materials by digitizing and including them in the historical and archival portions of the project.
